Cruising into Venice

One must try coming to Venice by sea at least once as it is an unforgettable experience.

True enough, we discovered.

Venice is made up of 180 islands very very close to each other; almost touching, to form one big island.

Coming in by sea meant very slow no-wake sailing between islands and at times between timber pole markers that indicate the route in.

If the 40 photos here bore you, scroll down to the end and click to go to another page.

Can you spot the harbour pilot craft approaching?

From a distance, Venice was like any other city with a thick blanket of smog over it.

The pinkish smog is more apparent if you click on the photo to enlarge it to see the details.

A new mole at one of the outer islands.

The end of the same mole.

We are cruising into the photos, zig-zagging between the islands, to reach the cruise centre which is still far far away in the distance as we go down the photos on this page.

The mole was stretching out from this island ... ...

... .... which has a grassed runway.

We have made a sharp turn to portside ie to the left, and looking back, we can see our quiet wake and another cruiser on our tail!

This and the next four photos show one of the islands that is away from the main group that forms Venice ... ...

Here we have first sight of the many wooden stakes that mark the channels for the various size vessels from little motor boats to water buses and ocean cruise liners.

In most cases, the stakes are tied bunches of three to six.

Ah, here is our first glimpse of Venice in the distance.

Click to enlarge photo to see details, like the two columns beside that tall tower (centre of photo) which are indicators of St Mark's Square.

Self shot taken while waiting for the next bend to come around.

We are going to take a zig left here, and then a zag right. That brought us into the cruise harbour of Venice.

Here we are berthed in Venice cruise harbour.

We had to walk down the dockside towards those trees (under the lifeboats), turn left and take the free shuttle to the main bus terminal, later on.
